Numeracy

The following are some areas of Numeracy that we cover each week in Primary Four. 

 

The activities mentioned are either attached as downloadable/reference documents (big pics) or have been sent home in booklet form (small pics). 

 

If you find that your child copes particularly well with any task, please avail of the ideas in the Other Resources section of the P4 site or the links at the bottom of the main Home School Resources page to extend their learning and practise skills in different ways.

Mental Maths (daily)

 

The Daily Mental Maths Book activity covers a wide range of skills and should be read and completed independently. 

Mon- Fri (pg 72 & 73)

Tables (daily)

This week and next will revise all the times and division tables learned so far in P4.


Here are some helpful strategies...

x0 - the answer is always 0!!!! (2x0=0, 10x0=0, 256x0=0, ...etc.)

x1 - the number always stays the same. (4x1=4. 20x1=20, 345x1=345, ...etc.)

x2 - you are just doubling the number (2x2=4, 12x2=24, 50x2=100, ...etc.)

x3 - counting in groups of three should help with these (3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18...etc.)

x4 - these are double the answers to the x2 tables (3x2=6 so 3x4 is double 6 =12)

x5 - counting in groups of five should help with these (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, ...etc.)

x10 - counting in tens will help and also doubling the answers to the x5 tables (3x5=15 s0 3x10=30...etc.)

 

Remember that multiplication and division are linked in the same way that addition and subtraction are. 

This should help you when you come across a tricky one.

Just think of the reverse. 

 

4x5=20 so 5x4=20 and then 20÷5=4 so 20÷4=5 etc.

 

Have a go at the activities below to help practice these facts in a fun way.

Monday & Wednesday

Over the next couple of weeks we will be continuing to practise our x1/x2/x3/x4/x5/x10 and the related division facts. Many of these activities will be taken from the NHM3 Assessment Book. 

 

Keep going over these at every opportunity so that you hardly have to even think about the answer!

 

Get some cubes, counters, pieces of pasta or even Smarties and an appropriate number of plates to help with these pages of division work about dividing.

When we were multiplying, we were counting in equal groups.

When we are beginning to divide, we have to also have equal groups.

 

On the page from the text book remember to: 

Read the page carefully and ask for more explanation if necessary.

Complete the task into your Numeracy Classwork Book

Set out neatly with 'date' and 'w.a.l.t. link x and ÷ facts'

Take your time, answer carefully and then check!

Read each question carefully and decide what you have to do with each number.

When you have finished, check carefully that your answers make sense.

Data Handling (Friday)

Did you had a good week investigating capacity?  What new things did you learn?

 

This week we are going to focus on different types of handling data.

This just means reading information and answering questions about it.

 

Have a look at the pages below from the NHM3 Activity Book and NHM3Text Book.

Talk about the new language that you notice.  Do you know what the words mean?

 

You have to be careful and accurate when using information so, take your time and check your answers!

While there are a lot of pages attached, this is just to show you different types of data handling. 

Pick one page from the Activity Book and/or one page from the Text Book to complete.
