Numeracy

Week beginning 1st June 2020

Daily Mental Maths

Daily Mental Maths Booklets are a great resource to help revise and reinforce taught mental maths skills.

Children should complete 1 column per day (Mon - Fri) in their Mental Maths Activity Booklet.

Tables

Children are, as normal, being asked to learn 1 Number Story per week.

Each story is laid out in your child's Number Stories Booklet which they have received home with them.

Please learn only 1 story per week;

E.G. Week 1 - 14 addition

        Week 2 - 14 subtraction

This week your child should learn number story:

Group 1 – story of 18 addition

Group 2 – story of 15 subtraction

Number Work

In this section we will set out the number work activities as we would teach the children each week.

1. Children will have a mental maths objective to cover each week. This will help to improve quick number recall.

2.  Children will have a written numeracy activity to complete each day. This will either be in the form of an uploaded worksheet or will be pages from the New Heinemann Maths (NHM) booklets which have been sent home.

Mental Maths Objective

Mentally count forward and backwards in 2s within 100.

For example:

Start at 10 and count forwards in 2s to 34.

            10, 12, 14, 16 etc.

Start at 72 and count backwards in 2s to 46

            72, 70, 68, 66, 64 etc.

Number Work Activity 1

Number Stories

Group 1 Complete one activity related to the story of 18

Group 2 Complete one activity related to the story of 15

Number Work Activity 2

Inverse Operations

Inverse operations are opposite operations – one reverses the effect of the other. In primary maths we talk about the inverse to explain how addition and subtraction are linked.

For example,

4 + 6 = 10 so 10 – 6 = 4

Inverse Operations

Starter

Revise number stories for 10:-

0 + 10 = 10

1 + 9 = 10

2 + 8 = 10

3 + 7 = 10

4 + 6 = 10

5 + 5 = 10

6 + 4 = 10

7 + 3 = 10

8 + 2 = 10

9 + 1 = 10

0 + 10 = 10

Ask your child - What if 2 + 8 = 10 what does 10 – 8 = ?

Repeat for the other addition facts.

Number Work Activity 3

Inverse Operations

Starter

Give your child a number within 15 and ask them to give you an addition fact and then ask them to rearrange the numbers to give you a subtraction fact.

For example,

  • Give them the number 12.
  • They could say the addition fact 10 + 2 = 12
  • Then these numbers can be rearranged to give a subtraction fact 12 – 2 = 10 or 12 – 10 = 2

Topic Work

Topic Maths includes Shape and Space, Measures and Data Handling.

We complete 1 piece of Topic Maths per week.

Topic Maths Activity

Revision of o’clock and half past

Activity

  • Complete the worksheets.
  • The first worksheet your child has to match the written time to the correct clock.
  • The second worksheet your child reads the time from the clock and writes the time.

The below top marks link shows a teaching clock which gives the time in analogue and digital times. Click on the button that says 'clock face' and this will allow you to show different times on the clock and the corresponding digital time.

When using top marks please change the clock to 12 hour rather than 24 hour for the digital times.  You can do this by clicking on the last button on the left hand side of the clock.

NHM Shape, Measures and Data Handling Booklet

If your child has not completed pages 17 and 18 in this booklet please complete.
