Activity 1:

To start off today, hold up 3 fingers on one hand for your child to count, and 1 on the other hand. Ask your child to find out how many fingers you are holding up altogether. You could also do this starter activity with Legos, twigs, pasta etc. Repeat a couple of times using different amounts. We are going to complete page  6 of the NHM Addition to 5 book today. We are introducing the children to the “+” sign today – how exciting! Your child may recognise it as an addition sign – but if not, hopefully they will know it by the end of this activity! Encourage them to copy the shape of the adding sign e.g. write it down, make a plus sign with straws, their own fingers, playdough etc.

You know how well your child has grasped this concept so far: if they need some concrete experience of addition, get out the Legos, socks, pasta etc and let your child work out the answers by touch counting the objects in front of them to work how many flowers in each side of the basket, and how many altogether. Your child may be able to work from the illustration on the page – you will know what stage they are at.

You can extend this activity by asking your child to pretend there is one extra flower in each basket, or one extra flower in each side of the basket (ie 2 more flowers). Can they work out the new total? They don’t necessarily need to write this down, but they may if you wish.


Activity 2:

NHM page 7 is a direct follow on from yesterday, but we are now being introduced to the “=” sign. To begin with, explain to your child that instead of writing “how many altogether” we use the = sign – and you can introduce the term “equals” to them. Again, they may have already seen this symbol  elsewhere, and they may know what it means – if not, hopefully your explanation will make sense to them.

As yesterday, gauge what level of support you feel your child needs to complete this activity.

Extra: does your child know the nursey rhyme linked with page 6 and 7 of the maths book? Have a go at saying Mary, Mary quite contrary together, count flowers on your daily walk or in your garden, ask your child to draw or make some of their own “flower sums” to solve.


Activity 3: Farm addition

This addition activity is slightly different – a secret code maths activity! There are 3 different pages of the same concept – complete as many as you wish. Explain to your child they will need to match the picture with the number beside it to work out the sum, then complete the addition sum to find the answer. If this concept is tricky, help them by writing the numbers under the pictures, and see if they can pick it up from there. If you can’t print it out, use toys and give each toy a number to 4. E.g. car = 1, ball = 2, Lego = 3, hat = 4. Then ask your child to “add” the car and the Lego 1 + 3 = ___. Alternatively, write out some simple addition sums to give your child to work through.


Activity 4:

Today, we are going to use a tablespoon to measure out some ingredients to make biscuits! If you don’t have the ingredients, measure out anything else at all – spoons of pasta, water, salt etc into a dish. Not only does this reinforce counting skills, and measuring skills, but it is also strengthening those little hand muscles that will be writing lots of sounds and numbers in the future. Haven’t tried this yet myself – but will rope the kids in and give it a whirl – fingers crossed they turn out well for all of us!

How many of our P1 friends can you see? Count them all!

How many friends from other classes do you recognise? Can you count them too?

Can you find a “4 in a row” of people you can name in the gallery? What’s the longest straight row you can find of faces you know? They can go in any direction!

Can you make a path from one row to the next, using only friends from P1? How about if you include children from other classes? Have fun looking for your friends, and making 4 in a row lines!
