Below, you will find your five Literacy activities for this week. In addition to these activities, please make sure that you are reading to and with your child.
Encourage your child to practise using scissors to cut a variety of shapes and materials (great for fine motor skill development). There are also lots of cutting skills activities available on Twinkl. Remember Twinkl is still offering free membership and access to resources using the code UKTWINKLHELPS.
Remember that Lego / construction toys and things like Playdough are fantastic resources too for enhancing fine motor skills.
You will find a Jolly Phonics Revision Book in the pile of books/resources for your child. All concepts within this book have been covered in class so your child should be familiar with the content. Please just use this book as and when you like to keep skills fresh.

Activity one - Grammar Book 1 - spelling 'th' revision
Using your child's Jolly Phonics Grammar Book 1 - Our spellings for this week are List 3. These are the words that you will use on Friday for your weekly check up - 'th' words ( us / sad / flag / this / with /that / thank / me / we / thinking).
Remember, in the lists each week there are a variety of words, some with the specific sound, some words that can be 'sounded out' and some tricky words. At the end of each week, we will ask that you do a little check up with these words so please work on them throughout the week.
Find the page in Grammar Book 1 with the thinking bubbles on it and the 'th' sound. Talk about the 'th' sound with your child and think of some 'th' words. Inside each thinking bubble, your child should write a 'th' word and draw a picture for that word. Afterwards, they should colour each picture to continue to develop pencil control.
On the next page, you will see space for 'Dictation' and 'Sentences'. On this page, call out the following for your child. You may wish to help them by 'sounding out' with them and saying the letter names when you come to the 'tricky words'.
1. That moth is big.
2. He is thin.
3. She cut the cloth.
Activity two - Grammar Book 1 - Grammar - Are these sentences correct?
Using your child's Grammar Book 1, find the next page with the jumbled sentences. Here, children are asked to unjumble the words, add any missing words and make sure there are capital letters and full stops in the correct places. Your child should write the corrected sentence on the line provided below.
Activity three - Rhyming words
Using your Literacy Booklet ABC, find the next page, 'Rhyming Words'. On this page you will see pictures of cat / mat / hat / hen / pen / ten / man / van / pan / shop / mop / hop / jug / mug / bug. Your child should write the word for each picture on the lines provided below each one and discuss how these words rhyme.
Colour neatly to complete.
Extension - ask your child to think of more rhyming words for each picture.
Activity four - Jolly Phonics Pupil Book 2 - ie / y / igh / i_e revision
In your Jolly Phonics Pupil Book 2 - find the next pages. You will see a page with 'ng' at the top and four 'ng' words sang / ring / swimming / reading. Your child should read the word and draw a picture for each. Below your child should trace the Tricky Words could / should / would and colour the edge of the flowers pink. On the next page you will see the various representations of the 'ie' sound - ie / y / i_e / igh. Talk about this with your child and identify which representation is used in each word at the top of the page. Below, there are four sentences and four pictures. Ask your child to read each sentence and choose which picture they match. Your child should copy the correct sentence below the appropriate picture. Your child can colour neatly to finish.
Activity five - Spelling check up and Tricky Word revision
Using Spelling List 3 from your Grammar Book 1, carry out a wee check up with your child. Call out each word and ask them to write it down. Remind them that some of the words can be sounded out and some may be Tricky Words. Here is a reminder of our list 3 words,
You may also call out a sentence for them to try using a couple of the words from this list, for example, 'he is at the shop with me.'
Then using your Tricky Words Booklet, complete the frog and lily pad page. On this page you will find the words, little / come / cut / what / were / have. Your child should write the words on the lily pads to help the frogs reach the pond.
We are going to leave this part here as it is good for us to remember, whilst all these written activities are important, it is essential for your child to be enjoying big movements with their bodies - climbing, hanging, running, crawling, jumping, skipping, making big movements with their arms and shoulders. All of these big movements help your child when it comes to the more intricate things. If your child is struggling with pencil grip and appropriate letter/numeral formation, please take things back a little and allow them to write large numerals and letters on big pages or using chalk / paintbrushes with water write on the pavements and in your garden. Baking trays filled with sand / sprinkles / salt or sugar / shaving foam are also great wee ideas for allowing your child to practise letter / numeral formation.
Practise learning to plait and tie laces or maybe learn to sew together...again, these lovely activities are fab for fine motor development.
Follow instructions to bake buns or cook something together.
Write secret notes to family members or write a letter to a neighbour. These are great ways to spread kindness and joy at this difficult time.
Draw and paint and create...these things are essential!
Sing songs and say rhymes...necessary for awareness of syllables and sound work (and singing makes us happy).
Engage in jigsaws and other puzzles - great for FMS and literacy skill development.
There are so many ways that you can help your child and we have no doubt that you will learn a lot from them as well...they're bright wee cookies!
